EU warns Malaria drug used for trials against COVID - 19
The
European Pharmaceutical Authority has warned that malaria drugs used
for trials treating covid-19 can have serious consequences, including
epilepsy and heart problems.
The authority said in a statement that the Chloroquine and hydrxychloroquine pills - approved by US president Donald Trump and others as codid-19-based remedies - are known to cause heart problems, especially when combined with other drugs.
To date no treatment has been approved for covid-19 and several trials are underway around the world. The drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine have long been used to treat malaria, and pain diseases.
In addition to potentially causing heart problems, the two medications can also have other side effects including damage to the liver and kidneys, as well as leading to decreased blood sugar.
